Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands in the southern Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela and outside the main hurricane belt. It is built around shore diving: the leeward west coast is lined with yellow-painted stones that mark drive-up dive sites, and divers rent a pickup, load their own tanks and enter when they like. The whole coastline is the Bonaire National Marine Park, managed by STINAPA, and every diver must pay a nature fee. Boat diving to Klein Bonaire and Washington Slagbaai National Park exists but is secondary to self-guided shore diving.
