Balaenoptera acutorostrata subsp.
An unnamed dwarf subspecies of the common minke whale, found mainly in the Southern Hemisphere. Exceptionally inquisitive, they approach boats and swimmers and often stay for extended interactions. The northern Great Barrier Reef holds the only known predictable aggregation of the whale in the world. Conservation status is assessed at the common minke whale species level (least concern); the dwarf subspecies is not separately IUCN-listed.

Strongly seasonal: the aggregation forms on the northern Ribbon Reefs in June and July only, coinciding with the whales' winter migration. Roughly 60-80 whales are thought to congregate off the northern Ribbon Reefs in those months. Operators cite about a 98% seasonal success rate, but any single encounter is not guaranteed. Effectively absent the rest of the year.
