Best places to dive with Reef manta ray
Mobula alfredi
A cleaning-station regular with a wingspan up to 4-5m, smaller than the oceanic manta ray. Raja Ampat is one of the only places in the world where both reef and oceanic manta species are resident, and Wayag Lagoon functions as a documented nursery for juvenile reef mantas.
Destinations ranked by how reliably reef manta ray is seen. The bars show the likelihood by month — never a guarantee. See the full species page for more.

The Hanifaru Bay signature species. The southwest monsoon (roughly May to December) funnels plankton into the bay and feeding aggregations peak June to November, strongest August to October around the new and full moons, with up to 247 mantas documented in one event. The northeast monsoon (January to March) is quiet. Reef mantas are also seen year-round at Baa's cleaning stations, but the mass aggregation is monsoon-driven.

The main scuba draw at Manta Bowl in Ticao Pass, one of the largest reef-manta aggregations in the Philippines — 280+ individuals identified by LAMAVE. Present year-round at the cleaning stations, most reliable roughly December to May. Requires the offshore Manta Bowl dive.

The signature animal of Tofo. Reef mantas are present year-round at Manta Reef's cleaning stations; sources report bigger aggregations (20+ at a time recorded) leaning to the cooler, plankton-rich months around October-January. Coded reliable all year rather than a single sharp peak.

Present in Komodo year-round, but where they are changes with the monsoon. A photo-ID study of 1,085 individuals (2013-2018) found peak abundance at the central cleaning stations — Karang Makassar and Mawan — from November to April on the northwest monsoon, with the lowest counts in August-September. At Manta Alley in the south the pattern inverts: peak May to October on southeast monsoon upwelling. Animals move between the two, roughly 35km apart. Park-wide the season is therefore close to flat, which is why no single peak is coded — pick the site to match the month, not the other way round. Densest aggregations reported at central stations are 10-20+ individuals in January-February. June-September at the central sites still produces individual mantas, just not the large aggregations.

Genuinely unreliable here. Manta Point is named for occasional sightings when the water is plankton-rich in the wet season (roughly December-March), but mantas should not be a reason to choose the Gilis.

Mantas are only an occasional visitor at Wakatobi and are not a reliable draw; this is a reef and macro destination rather than a manta one.
