Wakatobi

Wakatobi is a group of islands (Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, Binongko) in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, inside a large national marine park. The draw here is reef quality, not big pelagics: dense hard and soft coral cover along walls and slopes, plus strong macro life on the same dives.

The short version

Known forThe House Reef, an easy shore-accessed wall roughly 80m off the resort beach, dived unlimited day or night and often rated among the world's best shore dives.

Main tradeoffExpensive and effectively single-operator: most diving runs through Wakatobi Dive Resort or its Pelagian yacht, and a week runs well over $4,000 per person before flights.

Route overview

Moderate

Reachable but with some friction: 1 domestic flight.

Airport options

DPS

Ngurah Rai International Airport (Bali / Denpasar)

Origin for Wakatobi Dive Resort's private charter flight; most international guests overnight in Bali, then take the resort charter to the island airstrip

WNI

Matahora Airport (Wangi-Wangi)

Small commercial flights via Makassar (UPG) or Kendari for independent travel to Wakatobi; not used by the resort, which flies its own charter to a private airstrip near Tomia

Typical trip cost

$$$

over $4,000

Per person, excluding international flights.

  • This is a premium, near-single-operator destination.
  • Wakatobi Dive Resort's 2026 rates run from about $415/night for the entry Palm Bungalow up to $1,100+/night for pool villas, plus a $1,500 per-person 7-night dive package, so a week of diving is roughly $4,500-6,000+ per person before flights.
  • The Pelagian liveaboard is about $4,300-5,400 per person for 7 nights.
  • On top of either, the required round-trip charter flight from Bali is about $890 per person.
  • Independent, cheaper local options exist around Wangi-Wangi but are far more limited.

Permit or park fee

What you pay

A Wakatobi National Park conservation fee applies

with the resort and Pelagian it is bundled into the package price.

How it works

Wakatobi National Park fees are collected by the operators as part of the package rather than paid separately at the dock; independent divers pay a park fee locally.

Sources & last checked

Checked July 2026

Research is source-backed, but conditions and fees should still be confirmed locally.

Note on the data: Prices are 2026 published resort/Pelagian rates and will shift year to year. Water temperature is interpolated from the operator's seasonal descriptions, not a per-month dataset. Region and site coordinates are approximate island-level positions. Park fee is bundled into packages, so no separate published figure is confirmed here. Water temperature: Warm year-round; the operator reports about 28C March-May and November-March, cooling to a 26C low around July-August. Monthly min/max values are interpolated from that seasonal range. Access: Guests fly the resort's private charter from Bali (DPS) to a small island airstrip near Tomia, then take a short boat or land transfer to the resort; no long open-water crossing is required. Independently verified 2026-07-20 (confidence medium).
