Start with Cozumel’s reef drifts, then take the ferry to Playa del Carmen for guided cenote diving. Fly into Cozumel and home from Cancún. The second base suits divers who are comfortable being under a rock ceiling.

Check the Cozumel-to-Playa passenger sailing and the operator’s cancellation terms before paying for non-refundable rooms. Weather can stop boats; a timetable does not prove that today’s port is open. Keep the transfer day clear of diving. Ultramar lists a 25 kg baggage allowance; check excess charges for dive luggage. Tell the cenote operator your certification, recent dives and hotel address before booking. A mainland pickup may cost extra.
March to May is our planning choice, with April and May preferred to reduce winter-front exposure before hurricane season. Cozumel and guided cenote trips operate throughout the year, subject to local closures. December to February can bring northerly fronts and boat cancellations. June to November is Atlantic hurricane season; August to October is a poor choice for a tightly fixed ferry itinerary. This is a regional weather judgement, not a promise of calm days.
The cenotes are about geology, light and freshwater diving. Cozumel wildlife varies from dive to dive. Winter can offer eagle-ray sightings, but fronts can disrupt boats. This spring plan prioritises travel conditions over a particular animal. Rain and access restrictions can affect cenotes too; they are not an automatic storm-day substitute.
Book a qualified, full-cave-trained guide who is authorised to lead local cavern tours. Require an open-water assessment and a briefing on gas, lights, the guideline and turn limits. Remain in the daylight zone within the operator’s cavern limits. Full cave diving requires separate training and equipment. Decline the overhead if you feel uncomfortable; book open-water cenote or reef diving instead.
Under the Jungle’s 2026 policy asks for at least 20 logged dives, a dive within six months and no more than three guests per guide. Other operators differ. Advanced certification is useful but does not replace buoyancy or overhead preparation. This itinerary does not require deep sites such as The Pit or Angelita. Reef currents, boat exits and carrying equipment on cenote steps also need consideration.

Days 1–4 · 4 nights · 3 dive days
Arrival and transfer
Land at Cozumel International (CZM). Take an authorised airport shuttle or prearranged car to San Miguel, about 10–20 minutes after leaving the airport. Leg A ends at an example central hotel area. Check your dive operator’s marina pickup arrangements; those local rides are separate. No diving today.
Two dives
Begin with shallow reef drifts. Check weighting, buoyancy, surface-marker use and the boat pickup procedure. The guide chooses sites for the current and the group. Allow about 4–5 hours for the two-tank outing, plus travel to the marina.
Two dives
Use a second boat day for another reef section. Palancar or Columbia may be options within your training and the park’s current access rules. Turtles and nurse sharks are possible; no animal or named site is promised.
Two dives
Keep another reef day for a missed site or calmer weather. Decline deep walls or enclosed passages beyond your training. This plan does not include Devil’s Throat.
Days 5–10 · 5 nights · 3 dive days
Transfer day · no diving
From the central hotel area, walk about 10–15 minutes to Terminal Marítima San Miguel (B). Take the passenger ferry to Terminal Marítima NAVEGA in Playa del Carmen (C), about 45 minutes at sea. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sailing, earlier with checked dive bags. Walk 20–30 minutes to a central Playa hotel (D), or arrange luggage assistance and a taxi from an accessible street. Allow 2–3 hours door to door, longer after cancellations. These are passenger terminals, not the vehicle-ferry ports.
Two dives
Go by operator van from Playa del Carmen to a suitable cenote and return to the same hotel. Allow roughly 35–60 minutes each way for Chac Mool, the example shown by E and F. Begin with an open-water buoyancy and equipment check before any guided cavern route. A failed assessment means open-water diving or a land day.
Two dives
Return by van for two guided cavern dives selected for your ability and current access. E and F show the Chac Mool example only. Dos Ojos is farther south; allow roughly 60–90 minutes each way from Playa. Stay within the daylight zone and on the guide’s approved route. Do not disturb sediment or formations.
Two dives
Use another van day for a suitable shallow cavern or repeat a route at an unhurried pace. Allow 35–90 minutes each way depending on the cenote. E and F illustrate the local road pattern. More days do not qualify you for deeper or full-cave diving. Finish all diving by 16:00.
Land day · no diving
Keep the entire day free of diving. Stay local for a quiet day on foot, or take a separate Tulum archaeology outing by road, roughly 1–1½ hours each way plus entry queues. Do not combine distant sites. Confirm tomorrow’s airport pickup and keep at least 24 hours between surfacing and takeoff.
Departure and transfer
Take a prebooked car from the hotel to Cancún International (CUN), using Highway 307 (G). Allow 1–1½ hours on the road, plus your airline’s check-in allowance; traffic can take longer. An ADO airport bus is an alternative if its terminal and departure suit the flight. No ferry is needed today.

International flights, equipment rental and optional private transfers are not included.
Add two days before the ferry for another reef day and island time. Keep the mainland departure sequence. A longer stay creates more chances to dive after a closure, without promising recovery of every missed dive.
Cozumel guideAdd two days and one or two nights after diving if you want archaeology without a return day trip. Road travel from Playa takes about 1–1½ hours. Reprice the longer airport transfer or check Tulum (TQO) flights. This adds a third base and changes the map.
Riviera Maya guideThe final dive ends by 16:00 two calendar days before departure. Every version protects the next full day and at least 24 hours before takeoff. DAN recommends at least 18 hours after repetitive no-decompression diving; longer intervals reduce risk further but do not eliminate it. Follow any longer computer or operator restriction. Decompression diving needs a different plan. Do not fly with possible decompression symptoms; seek medical advice.
