Mozambique

Best overall months to dive: May–Nov

Mozambique runs down the east coast of southern Africa, facing the warm Indian Ocean. For divers the draw is big animals over reef, not coral aesthetics: reef mantas at cleaning stations, resident whale sharks, and humpbacks passing through in the austral winter. The signature spots are Tofo and the wider Inhambane coast in the south, plus the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos further north. Diving is mostly surf-launch and reef-based rather than liveaboard. Infrastructure is developing and it is a malaria area, so trips need planning.
