Two tiger sharks ascending through blue ocean water

KwaZulu-Natal Shark Coast

Two offshore reef systems off southern KwaZulu-Natal, dived almost entirely by surf-launch inflatable. Aliwal Shoal sits about 5km off Umkomaas, a fossilised dune reef 6–30m deep; Protea Banks lies roughly 7–8km off Shelly Beach and is deeper and more exposed, a 6km submerged shoal averaging around 30m. The draw is sharks on a strong seasonal clock: ragged-tooth (sand tiger) sharks aggregate in the austral winter and spring, roughly June–November; tiger and bull sharks are warmer-water animals peaking in summer and autumn; scalloped and great hammerheads school at Protea in summer; and the Sardine Run pushes dolphins, sharks, whales and gannets up the coast around June–July. Conditions are advanced: often blue-water, deep, current-swept dives with cooler, thermocline-prone water. The shark dives here are baited and done cageless on scuba, and sharks are seasonal and never guaranteed.

What makes it special

  • Winter ragged-tooth aggregations in Aliwal's Cathedral and Raggie Cave and Protea's Northern Pinnacle caves
  • Summer and autumn baited tiger and bull (Zambezi) shark dives, done cageless on scuba
  • Protea's deep pinnacles with schooling scalloped and great hammerheads
  • The Sardine Run bait-ball feeding action (roughly May–July)

Price is per person for a typical trip, excluding international flights ($ under $2,000 to $$$ over $4,000).

Wide range. A baited shark dive at Aliwal is around R1,900 (~$105) including air; a tiger-focused dive ~R2,250 with a raggie add-on ~R600. A Protea Banks package runs from ~R9,700 for six days with reef, wreck and baited dives. A full Sardine Run expedition is ~R45,500–68,000 for 6–8 nights. An Aliwal Shoal marine-protected-area permit is ~R75/year or ~R45/month; note the permit sale system reportedly changed in 2024 — confirm with the operator.

Visibility

Getting there
Easy Day trips from a coastal base, about 1h from the airport, then a short boat.
Experience
Protea Banks and the deep baited dives want Advanced Open Water plus ~25–30 logged dives and comfort descending in blue water. Some Aliwal sites and the shallow (~8–10m) baited dive accept Open Water divers.

  • DURKing Shaka International Airport (Durban) (~45 minutes to Umkomaas (Aliwal Shoal); ~1 hour 45 to Shelly Beach (Protea Banks))

Permit required

A South African marine-protected-area scuba permit is required for Aliwal Shoal (an MPA), sold annually or monthly and usually arranged by the operator. Availability of the permit changed around 2024 — verify the current requirement with your dive centre.

Aliwal Shoal MPA scuba permit ~R75/year or ~R45/month (indicative; confirm current requirement).

Dive sites

Worth knowing before you book

  • Access is by surf-launch inflatable punching through the break — entries can be rough and cause seasickness.
  • The shark dives are baited and done cageless on scuba (divers hover around a bait drum), not in a cage — worth knowing before you book.
  • The water is cool with thermoclines; plan on a 5–7mm or semidry suit, especially in winter.
  • Protea Banks is deep (often 28–40m), current-swept and frequently blue-water — advanced divers only, and sharks are strongly seasonal and never guaranteed.
  • The Sardine Run is weather-dependent and can mean six to eight hours a day on the boat for uncertain action.

Sources & last checked

Checked July 2026

This is a researched draft, not yet human-verified. The seasonality and logistics are drawn from the sources below — confirm specifics (permits, fees, closures) with an operator before you book.

Note on the data: Tiger-shark peak months are a genuine source spread (encoded conservatively as a Feb–May peak). MPA permit fees and availability changed around 2024 — verify. Coordinates are approximate; the Aliwal centre is anchored on the Produce wreck. Water temperature (~19–27°C) not published per-month. Great hammerhead IUCN status not independently confirmed. Water temperature: Bands are +/-0.5C around the source's published monthly averages for Aliwal Shoal (subtropical, with a real ~26C summer to ~21C winter drop). Protea Banks is deeper and more exposed and these surface figures mask strong thermoclines, so a dive at 30m in winter can be several degrees colder. Access: King Shaka International (Durban, DUR) is ~45min to Umkomaas (Aliwal Shoal) and ~1h45 to Shelly Beach (Protea Banks); diving is by surf-launch RIB, a short ~5-8km / 15-20min run to the reef rather than a long open crossing. Independently verified 2026-07-20 (confidence high).
