The largest animal known to have lived. The animals passing Timor-Leste are pygmy blue whales, migrating roughly 5,000km between the Banda Sea and southern Australia. They are watched from boats at the surface — this is not an animal you dive with, and in-water approaches are contested on welfare grounds.

Southbound migration through the Ombai–Wetar Strait runs roughly September to December, with mid-October to November the window research and reporting point at. Timing shifts year to year with ocean conditions. Charles Darwin University's programme has sighted more than 2,700 pygmy blue whales in Timor-Leste's waters since 2014. Sightings are from boats on dedicated whale trips, not from dives — coded conservatively because there is no published per-trip encounter rate.
