Pulau Koon (Too Many Fish)

A small island off the southeastern tip of Seram with one dive that matters. When the tide is right the fish density is among the highest anywhere in Indonesia and the predators come in behind the schools. When it is wrong the dive is not run.

Unique features

  • Tidal current concentrates on one point and drives large schools of fusiliers, surgeonfish and snapper across the slope
  • Grouper spawning site on the adjacent sandy slope, subject of WWF-supported protection work
  • Tide-dependent — operators wait for slack and skip it outright on the wrong tide
