Vaavu Atoll

Vaavu Atoll lies 55–80km south of Malé and is built around tidal channel diving. Fotteyo and Miyaru Kandu put grey reef sharks, eagle rays and schooling fish on the up-current corners, usually at 20–30m.

Note on the data: Site coordinates are approximate map positions rather than surveyed entry coordinates. Northeast-monsoon channel conditions are supported by the Maldives Meteorological Service, the official Miyaru protected-area description and multiple operator guides, but tide overrides calendar timing. The scale and mechanism of Alimatha provisioning lack a peer-reviewed site-specific study; several current operator and travel sources acknowledge feeding or food-waste conditioning, so the brief states the influence without claiming a measured ecological effect. No dependable Vaavu-wide fee schedule was found. Fotteyo's 2023 protection announcement is official, while detailed current zoning and permit conditions were not available in English. Hammerheads, threshers, whale sharks and mantas are omitted because the available Vaavu seasonality claims were operator-led or contradictory. Coral tradeoffs use national 2024 evidence because no post-bleaching Vaavu survey was located. Water temperature: Bands are plus or minus 0.5°C around published monthly surface averages for Felidhoo; they do not represent measured temperatures at depth on individual dives. Access: Scheduled speedboats from Velana International Airport reach Fulidhoo in about 70–75 minutes; more distant Vaavu islands commonly take 75–90 minutes, with schedules and sea state affecting the crossing.
