Best places to dive with Pygmy seahorse

Hippocampus bargibanti

A tiny (under 2cm), camouflaged seahorse that lives exclusively on specific sea fan (gorgonian) hosts, matching the fan's color and texture. A must-find for macro photographers and one of the reasons Raja Ampat is rated a year-round macro destination alongside its pelagic diving.

Destinations ranked by how reliably pygmy seahorse is seen. The bars show the likelihood by month — never a guarantee. See the full species page for more.

Southern Komodo only in practice — Cannibal Rock and the Nusa Kode sites, on gorgonians. Resident year-round with no documented seasonality, but access is the real constraint: the south is liveaboard-only and southern itineraries are more common May-October. Cold water (22-26C) and a guide who knows the specific fans are both required.
