Cenderawasih Bay dive region

Cenderawasih Bay

Cenderawasih Bay is a large marine national park between Central Papua and West Papua. Its best-documented draw is the whale shark aggregation around lift-net fishing platforms near Kwatisore. Long-term tracking research supports year-round habitat use, but individual sharks still move in and out of the bay. Full-bay liveaboards add outer reefs, endemic reef fish and Second World War wrecks near Manokwari. Shorter land-based trips from Nabire focus more heavily on the whale shark area. Most diving is warm and relatively sheltered, although exposed points and island passages can run current. The distance between zones means one short trip cannot cover the whole bay.

What makes it special

  • Year-round whale shark habitat around Kwatisore's lift-net fishing platforms
  • A full-bay route combining whale sharks, outer reefs and isolated island passages
  • Second World War wreck diving near Manokwari, including Shinwa Maru
  • Reef-fish endemism shaped by the bay's long geological isolation

Liveaboard, Land based, Day trip

Price is per person for a typical trip, excluding international flights ($$ $2,000–4,000 to $$$ over $4,000).

Three-day land-based whale shark packages have recently been advertised from about $700 before flights. Full-bay liveaboards commonly run 7–12 nights and roughly $2,800–5,300+ per person. One current 11-night itinerary lists a separate $300 park and port charge. Prices and local fees vary by route and should be reconfirmed before booking.

Visibility
1030m — The Kwatisore platforms commonly have 10–20m visibility. Outer reefs may reach 15–30m, with rain and runoff reducing visibility close to shore.
Getting there
Moderate Reachable but with some friction: 1 domestic flight, a 3h boat crossing.
Experience
Whale shark dives beneath the fishing platforms are generally shallow and sheltered. Some outer reef points, wreck penetration and current-exposed passages require Advanced Open Water or additional experience.

Nearest airports

  • NBXDouw Aturure Airport (Nabire) (Domestic connections via major Indonesian hubs; used for shorter Kwatisore trips and some liveaboard departures)
  • MKWRendani Airport (Manokwari) (Domestic connections via Makassar, Jakarta or Sorong; common full-bay liveaboard port)

Permit required

Visits operate inside Teluk Cenderawasih National Park. Boats report to local authorities and liveaboard procedures require coordination with a park ranger and Kwatisore village before whale shark visits.

Published procedures record a Rp300,000 per-person Kwatisore village whale shark fee. Liveaboard listings may bundle broader park and port charges, currently advertised around $300 per trip; confirm the exact inclusions with the operator.

Long-term tracking supports year-round habitat use in Cenderawasih Bay. Numbers at individual Kwatisore platforms vary with anchovy catch and shark movements, so resident does not mean every visit produces the same encounter.

Worth knowing before you book

  • The whale sharks feed around working fishing platforms and may receive discarded catch. Divers who avoid human-associated wildlife encounters may not want this format.
  • The bay is remote. Reaching Nabire or Manokwari normally means at least one domestic flight after entering Indonesia.
  • Full-bay itineraries are long and expensive; shorter land-based trips cover far less of the reef and wreck diving.
  • Whale sharks use the bay year-round, but individual presence and the number at a platform vary with fishing activity and anchovy availability.
  • Park, village and port charges are inconsistently bundled by operators and should be checked in writing before payment.

This is a researched draft, not yet human-verified. The seasonality and logistics are drawn from the sources below — confirm specifics (permits, fees, closures) with an operator before you book.

Note on the data: Whale shark presence is supported by WWF monitoring and peer-reviewed tracking work. Exact dive-site coordinates, current strength outside the main routes, package prices and combined park charges remain operator-derived. The bay spans two provinces and very large distances, so access values are representative rather than universal. Water temperature: Published satellite-tracking research found persistently warm surface habitat, with a median around 30.9°C. The 28–31°C dive range is a conservative regional range compiled from that research and current dive-condition reporting, not a measured monthly series. Access: Nabire and Manokwari are domestic gateways reached through larger Indonesian hubs. Nabire to the Kwatisore area is commonly described as roughly three hours by boat; full-bay legs vary. Land-based whale shark trips exist, so the region is not liveaboard-only.
