Batu Bolong

A small island with a hole through it, between Komodo Island and Tatawa. The reef is dense because nothing is allowed to be fished here and the current feeds it constantly. Dived as a slow lap of the lee side, edging out only as far as the current allows. Water is 27-29C in the dry season.

Unique features

  • Coral-covered pinnacle dropping past 50m on its steepest sides; divers work the sheltered lee and cross into current
  • Strong up-currents and down-currents on the exposed faces — the reason this site is advanced-only despite its shallow top
  • Anthias over every coral head, with whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and giant trevally in the blue
