Socorro

Socorro sits within the Revillagigedo Archipelago, a cluster of volcanic islands roughly 390km south of the Baja California peninsula, reachable only by a 24-hour liveaboard crossing from San Jose del Cabo. Giant oceanic manta rays are resident year-round at cleaning stations like The Boiler and Cabo Pearce, while humpback whales pass through January to March and whale sharks are most reliably seen November and December.

Permit or park fee

What you pay

about $1,170 for a typical six-diving-day trip, charged on top of the liveaboard fare. Fees have risen sharply and are pesos-denominated, so confirm the current amount at booking.

How it works

Diving is restricted to a limited number of licensed liveaboards operating within Revillagigedo Archipelago National Park (established 2017); independent or non-liveaboard access is not permitted.

Note on the data: Whale shark seasonality is a genuine source conflict (see knownTradeoffs) — see the whale-shark sighting record for how this was resolved. Region center coordinates are an approximation (roughly midway between Socorro Island and Roca Partida, which are ~110km apart) since there's no single population center to anchor on; consider whether the map should instead show a pin per island. Price range reflects 2025/2026 quoted rates from a small sample of operators, not a systematic survey. Water temperature: The Nov-May dive season runs warm at the start (26-28C in Nov-Dec) and coolest in Jan-Mar (roughly 20-24C); the warmer Jun-Oct figures are the summer surface peak but the archipelago is effectively closed then for hurricane season, so those months are interpolated from seasonal data rather than dive reports. Access: Liveaboard-only: fly into Los Cabos (SJD), transfer about 45 minutes to the Cabo San Lucas marina, then cross roughly 320nm of open Pacific in a 24-30 hour passage (commonly cited 24-28h) to reach the Revillagigedo dive sites. Independently verified 2026-07-20 (confidence medium, 1 region correction(s) applied).
