Moalboal

Moalboal is a small town on the southwest coast of Cebu, in the Philippines, facing the Tañon Strait. The headline is the resident sardine baitball: a school estimated in the hundreds of thousands to millions that sits roughly 20-30m off Panagsama Beach, shallow enough to snorkel and reachable as a walk-in shore dive.

Note on the data: Sardine baitball is coded resident (present most of the year) rather than a seasonal peak, because density and location genuinely fluctuate and the school has moved along the coast between years. Whale sharks are deliberately excluded: the well-known encounter is provisioned feeding at Oslob, a separate town, not a wild Moalboal sighting. Dive-site coordinates are approximate. Prices are quoted in Philippine pesos from operator listings and converted to rough USD. Monthly water temps are interpolated from published surface averages, not a per-month min/max dataset. Water temperature: maxC tracks published monthly surface averages (about 27.3C in February up to 29.6C in June); minC is nudged a degree lower to reflect deeper wall dives and mild thermoclines, so the swing is interpolated rather than measured. Warm enough for a 3mm or shorty year-round. Access: Fly into Mactan-Cebu (CEB), then a paved road transfer of about 2.5-3.5 hours by private van, taxi or public bus; no domestic flight or boat crossing needed. Independently verified 2026-07-20 (confidence high).
