Best places to dive with Whale shark

Encountered in the rainy season, June to November, with the best odds roughly July to September over the same seamounts. Never guaranteed and largely absent in the dry season.

The Important Shark and Ray Areas assessment gives a photo-ID-backed two-season pattern: May-October around the Talisayan bagan platforms, and November-February closer to Derawan itself. Operators sell mid-June to mid-September as the sweet spot, which sits inside the first of those. The Talisayan encounters happen at lift-net fishing platforms where the sharks feed on the catch, so they are bagan-associated — though the ISRA notes whale sharks were reported here in the 1980s-90s, before bagan fishing began around 2012-13, so the aggregation is not purely a creation of the fishery.

The headline animal, encountered by snorkel (not scuba) in Donsol Bay under the BIO program — wild and non-provisioned. Season runs roughly November to June with peak numbers around February to May; sightings are plankton-driven and not guaranteed, and numbers vary year to year. Also recorded occasionally at Manta Bowl.

Wolf and Darwin only in practice; cool/dry season, peak roughly August–September. Mostly very large, apparently pregnant females.

The aggregation supports licensed snorkel tours. Incidental scuba sightings remain possible but are not the product.

Most operators report November-December as the strongest window. At least one operator instead emphasizes April-May, particularly on the season's final trips — genuine disagreement between sources, treated conservatively here.

Araujo et al. 2017 (Aquatic Conservation 27:986-994) recorded whale sharks at Panaon Island between November and June across 2013-2016, describing highly variable seasons and identifying no peak; LAMAVE, the institute behind the paper, gives the same November-June range. Independent local sources put the strong window earlier than operators often market it — the Pintuyan tourism office describes it as typically November to May. The municipality's administrative season is deliberately wider than the animals' actual presence, so October dates reflect when the season opens, not when sharks arrive. These are wild, non-provisioned animals: nothing is guaranteed in any month.

Tofo has a near-resident whale-shark population, so sightings are possible year-round but track plankton blooms, with the reliable warm-season window around October-March. They are typically encountered on surface ocean-safaris rather than on dives.

Long-term tracking supports year-round habitat use in Cenderawasih Bay. Numbers at individual Kwatisore platforms vary with anchovy catch and shark movements, so resident does not mean every visit produces the same encounter.

South Ari is year-round developmental habitat, mainly for juvenile males. That describes atoll-level presence, not a dependable sighting on each trip or dive.

In Baa Atoll, whale sharks are seasonal Hanifaru feeders tied to the same southwest-monsoon plankton bloom (roughly May to November, best late July to early October), not the year-round residents of South Ari Atoll. Only a few join the manta feeding, so occasional at best even in peak season.

A preliminary DOF-MFRDMD-UMT local-knowledge study recorded 36 Tenggol sightings in 2017–2023 and 25 in 2024, with the highest concentration in October. Survey effort and individual counts remain unresolved, so the data support a seasonal October signal but not a per-dive encounter rate.

A genuine rarity here, not a reason to book. Occasional August sightings are reported over the offshore banks; do not expect one.

Whale sharks are recorded around Fuvahmulah, but the reviewed research did not support a reliable local peak. Treat any encounter as a bonus rather than a reason to select a month.

Whale sharks are reported occasionally, sometimes tied to plankton-rich water, but sightings at Koh Chang are genuinely rare and never reliable despite operator marketing.

Whale sharks do occur here, but sparsely. Marine Conservation Cambodia, a research NGO rather than an operator, reports roughly ten sightings a year across Cambodia's archipelagos, and a 2022 Gulf of Thailand photo-ID study establishes real regional seasonality. Cambodian dive pages advertising whale sharks at Shark Point 'in December and May' overstate it: encounters remain chance events and no month override is coded, because the Cambodian record is too thin to support a season.

Listed as a supporting species in the ISRA factsheet and reported occasionally at Western Rocky and the outer sites. There is no documented whale shark season for Mergui — encounters track the same plankton-rich late-season window that brings the mantas. Treat any operator whale shark claim as a chance encounter.

A rare pelagic passer-by, slightly more likely in the January–April dry season.

Whale sharks are reported occasionally at Big Mount, most often around March–April and September. Reports come from operators and local dive logs; there is no photo-ID programme, tagging study or survey series behind them for this coast. Do not plan a trip around it.

Possible in suitable habitat; no unsupported monthly peak is applied.

Occasional reports only — Raja Ampat is not a reliable whale shark destination. Cenderawasih Bay, a separate marine area elsewhere in Papua, is where whale sharks are genuinely resident year-round.
